EU Horizon 2020: SPICES Space-borne observations for detecting and forecasting sea ice cover extremes
Automatic remote sensing products traditionally provide general information of sea ice conditions, like extent and concentration. However, for tactical navigation, management of offshore activities, and initialization of forecasting models, parameters like sea ice thickness distributions, the fraction of multi-year, ice or anomalies in the timing of freezing and melting are urgently needed. The main objective of SPICES is to develop new methods to retrieve sea ice parameters from existing (and imminent) satellite sensors to provide enhanced products for polar operators and prediction systems, specifically addressing extreme and unexpected conditions.
