In this study, Armineh Barkhordarian introduces a new metric to examine the extent to which greenhouse gas-induced changes in regional climate variability, in isolation from changes in mean climate, contribute to the frequency of hot extremes and heavy precipitation events. Dividing attribution metrics into their mean and variability components provides important insights into the region-specific mechanisms that influence the frequency of extreme events.
