Education
Teaching at the Institute of Oceanography enfolds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science programme. Please carefully read the information on our website, before you decide to study Oceanography in Hamburg. Additionally we recommend to read the study path pages from the Universität Hamburg.
Bachelor of Science 'Earth System Physics'
The three-year, English-language Bachelor's programme Earth System Physics (B.Sc.) is a joint offer by the disciplines of Geophysics, Oceanography and Meteorology. This mathematics and physics-based study path provides a broad interdisciplinary education in earth system sciences and also enables students to specialise in an individualised subject area of their choice.
This programme replaces the former B.Sc. Geophysics/Oceanography since the winter semester 2025/26.
Our pages provide more specific information about the B.Sc.:
Bachelor of Science 'Geophysics/Oceanography' (discontinued)
Applications for this study track are no longer accepted. This programme is replaced by the new B.Sc. Earth System Physics since the winter semester 2025/26.
The three-year, German-language study path for the Bachelor (B.Sc.) in Geophysics/Oceanography unites the approved fundamental physical basic education of the two former diploma paths. It satisfies modern requirements of a practical, methodical and theoretical oriented education.
Our pages provide more specific information about this discontinued B.Sc.:
Master of Science 'Ocean and Climate Physics'
Following a B.Sc., you can advance your studies with a two-year, English-language Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree course in ocean and climate physics. Aims of the M.Sc. courses is a good scientific education, coupled closely to current scientific work of the institute. Students have the possibility to work in actual research projects, participate on research cruises and to evaluate data and models of physical processes on mainframe computers. The M.Sc. opens wide possibilites on the international job markets in research instituitions and the economy. It is required for a doctors degree and hence a first step into an academic career.
Our pages provide more specific information about the M.Sc. General information can be found on the website of the Universität Hamburg.
