Experimental Oceanography
The Experimental Oceanography group carries out observational studies of the physics and geography of the ocean currents and water properties. Our work focuses on physical phenomena and processes related to the Earth’s climate and its variability, such as the dynamics of ocean currents and their associated heat and freshwater fluxes, the exchange of water between ocean basins and the stirring and mixing of water masses that lead to a modification of their properties.
The main working area of the Experimental Oceanography group is the polar and subpolar North Atlantic, but studies are also done in the European Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean as well as on a global scale. Funding for the research activities is provided by the European Commission, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
