What is the difference to the former BSc Geophysik/Ozeanographie?

Will I learn about fish and sea creatures?
The Oceanography specialication focuses on the dynamics of the oceans and sea ice and their respective roles in the climate system. This should not be confused with the study of marine biology. It is therefore less about fish and other sea creatures and more about the description of physical processes in the sea such as ocean currents, waves and temperature changes.

Do I need to prove my English language skills?
Yes, to enroll in this program proof of sufficient English language proficiency is required in order to reasonably follow the lectures taught in English. But don't worry, studying in English isn't that difficult – your school English should be perfectly adequate. The necessary technical English is introduced in the lectures, and anyone who wants to can attend in-depth English courses at the university.
English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages must be demonstrated. For German Abitur, attendance of a basic English couse in the senior years of high school and an average score of at least six points is sufficient.

Do I need to know German to enroll in this programme?
No, a proof of German language proficiency is not required. All required courses of the programme will be taught in English. However, the pool of courses to choose from in the Required and Free Elective Areas is much larger for students proficient in German. It is also advisable to learn German for life in Hamburg. Attendance of a German language course is encouraged, the acquisition of German language skills can be recognised in the Free Elective Area.
I will change my degree program – Will my credits be recognized?
A recognition of previously attained credits or attended lectures is generally possible, if the modules/courses match the curriculum of your program. A decision on this will only be made after you have started your studies, in consultation with the Academic Office. Please visit for detailed information:
I have missed the application deadline – Can I still apply?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to enrol after the application deadline has passed. In order to ensure equal treatment in the application process, the university is bound by legal requirements to adhere to the deadlines.

Information for future students
What is the difference between the different welcome weeks offered?
The PIASTA Welcome week is organised by the Department of International Affairs and welcomes all new students to the University of Hamburg and provides general information.
The Orientation weeks are organised by the individual degree programs for their new students and provide subject-specific information.
